Day 8 - Three castles, Maruoka, Hikone and Nagahama
On Friday we left Kanazawa to travel to Nagahama which was to be our base for the Sekigahara weekend. On the way we visited three castles.

Maruoka Castle was small with just the keep remaining. Originally built in 1576 it is considered the oldest surviving keep although it was rebuilt, using the same materials, in 1950 after extensive earthquake damage. There is a small museum nearby.

Hikone Castle retains extensive outer works as well as the keep. The keep was moved and erected here in 1575. Many of the other buildings are original. There is an excellent museum, gardens and a reconstruction of the palace accommodation. Along with Himeji, Matsumoto, Kumamoto it's one of the top castles to visit. Unlike many others the museum allows photography.

Nagahama Castle is a reconstruction in concrete. Inside there is an interesting small museum with a fantastic diorama of building a castle.
