Major General Edward William De Lancy Lowe
10th February 1820 - 21st October 1880
Son of Lieutenant General Sir Hudson Lowe. Born on St. Helena while Napoleon was detained there.
His mother, Susan, was a sister of Colonel Sir William Howe De Lancey, who was appointed deputy quartermaster-general of the army in Belgium in 1815 to replace Hudson Lowe, who Wellington disliked. De Lancey died of wounds he received at the Battle of Waterloo. Susan had been widowed and married Lowe on 30th December 1815. She disliked life on St. Helena which was not what she had expected and was bitter and unpopular. They had two sons and three daughters.
Ensign in 32nd Foot, 20th May 1837. Lieutenant 1841, Captain 1845, Major 1st July 1857, Lt. Colonel 26th September 1858.
Commanded the 32nd Light Infantry during the defence of the Lucknow Residency, 1857.
He was involved in several subsequent actions and was severely wounded. He was promoted Colonel (initially brevet rank) in 1859.
Later commanded the 2nd battalion 21st Royal North British Fusiliers and the 86th Royal County Down Regiment.
Retired in 1872 on half pay, promoted Major General 1877. (At that time promotion beyond Colonel happened automatically based on seniority only).
He married Russel, a daughter of Colonel Basil Jackson, who had served as a junior officer in the quartermaster-general's department under Sir Hudson Lowe in the Netherlands and at St. Helena. She died 18th June 1908 and is also buried there.
The Memorial is in good condition. It stands a short way north of the central road, just north-west of the Anglican Chapel.
